3D Video Games???

A couple of days ago, I posted an entry about motion games and their new place in the video game world.

However, I was reading Entertainment Weekly and learned of the new phenomenon that is going to sweep the nation: The 3D video game. In case you do not know what I am talking about, see the article below:

This  3D thing is getting a little ridiculous. How much more do we need? Nintendo obviously thinks this could be a big hit but I am a little skeptical with prices as all 3D products are expensive.
Thoughts?

Funny, I read this a while ago:
    http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/eye-specialists-question-nintendos-warning-on-3-d-technology-and-children/?scp=9&sq=nintendo%203D%20game&st=cse

I think 3D video game would work for first person shooter games, or other games that are already in a perspective view. Adding 3D to games played in section (Mario World) or in plan view (Bomberman, Zelda) wouldn’t be that much more exciting in 3D, unless if they could be played in a 3D manner (movement in the z-direction).

I feel like the companies will keep coming up with new little fads that change games slightly and with that change comes a price bump. They spend millions in marketing and feel that if they can convince people that they “need” an item they will buy it. Once a large enough majority buys into that idea the people who are opposed to it will have no choice other than to go with the flow. The last time this happened was with the $10 add on to next generation games along with blue ray disks. So until the consumers stop throwing away money on slight upgrades the prices will continue to change and get out of hand.

Just like everything else the prices of 3D Games will go down when they come out. Im not sure that this is a good idea just yet because not all tv’s have changed over to the 3D world. I havent read the article but if 3D games are going to be a reality then i feel they should wait a couple more years

I agree 100%. I think the tech industry is becoming very saturated. however, some improvements are definitely beneficial (i.e. HD). the question is how much does the average consumer really care about the marginal benefits between current technology and the new-to-the-market super high quality technolgy?

I disagree in that I think that 3D gaming is entirely feasible and will one day dominate the video game market. At the present time 3D technology is relatively unrefined and absurdly expensive. I believe that once the technology improves and users will no longer have to wear glasses in order to partake in the 3D experiences the technology will gain critical mass and, like with all other technologies, prices will drop. I think that 3D gaming will enhance the teaching capability of video games because it will add an element of realism to the games which will allow them to better achieve flow and facilitate learning.
