Good vs. Bad “Gamification”

A few weeks ago in class, I introduced you to the idea of “gamification” and “game mechanics.” As with anything, there’s a good and a bad way to approach this idea. Here’s an excellent little blog post that digs into the topic, and explains why “true” game designers hate the gamification trend so much (they really are just hating on the “bad” gamification).

I think this article has a lot of good ties to what we’ve been talking about in class. When we talk about school and the way gaming is integrated, many times they are examples of “bad gamification” (like Math Blaster, etc). These games just slap on rewards onto an interaction (like a math problem) which makes it terrible. I think it would be interesting to see how the video game school curriculum stacks up when comparing it to good vs. bad gamification.
