smartphones vs. videogames

The president of Nintendo told video game developers that smartphones were driving a trend toward lower quality and economically unsustainable video games.  The surfacing of low-cost video games for smartphones has led to a major shift in the way that many people experience video games.  In addition, the popularity of casual smartphone games like Angry Birds is particularly threatening to companies like Nintendo.  Video game console makers have looked to distinguish themselves by creating devices that do things that phones cannot.  Nintendo’s biggest response has been the 3DS, a portable 3D gaming device that does not require glasses.  What do you think of the experience of gaming on lower quality games on phones as compared to video game consoles?

It’s funny because my roommate just downloaded FIFA for his Iphone and likes it more on the iPhone than the PS2. THe graphics and controls are pretty comparable and the game is virtually identical. Maybe the video game console has met its match!

I think that phone games are just a different market for video game developers. Low quality and highly portable games aren’t really taking over previous gamers, they’re just giving them yet another option. I think people that really enjoy video games will still be purchasing consoles and handhelds for their performance. The PSP is a powerful machine and is getting even better with the announcement of the new PSP NGP.

Our phones will just have everything we need in the future, electronics wise. The only exception being probably computers since their size has to be comparable to typing, unless texting becomes much easier then that’s more competition.

I do agree that phone games are a different market. I think the target customers are also different when it comes to cell phones. I think that because of apps, more people are now having a chance to play game anywhere and anytime. Games on console give users better graphics and better scenario, but it doesn’t allow users to play anywhere. I think video games on the phones increase light video games players, instead of heavy game players. And those games are based on the advantages of cellphone such as portable, gps system and internet based.
